| Synopsis:
John Amsterdam (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is a New York homicide detective unlike any other. He is brilliant, mysterious, reckless, magnetic… and immortal. In 1642 he saved a Native Indian girl during a massacre of her indigenous tribe. In return, the girl cast an ancient spell that conferred immortality upon him. Amsterdam will not age, she told him, until he finds his one true love. Now present day, Amsterdam has one sole confidante: jazz club owner Omar (Stephen McKinley Henderson), the keeper of Amsterdam’s secret. Otherwise, no one knows of his immortality, not even his strong-willed partner on the force, Eva Marquez (Zuleikha Robinson). When Amsterdam suffers a heart attack while chasing a suspect, he is pronounced dead by Dr. Sara Dillane (Alexie Gilmore). When he miraculously recovers moments later, Amsterdam realizes that his soul mate must have been nearby. |

Pretty good show. I don't see it lasting more than a season or two though due to the plot. But, I enjoyed watching all the episodes thus far and look forward to the next one.

"Honor" is one of the better episodes. I like it almost as much as legacy (my favorite). This episode deals with the subject of rape.
Review of New Amsterdam: John Amsterdam has lived long enough to outlive many wives and dozens of his children. After saving the life of a shaman in the 1630s, John was given the blessing and curse of immortality. He will not die or grow old until he meets the one and their "souls are wed". When he does, he will feel it in his heart. Loves have come and gone but he still has not found his soul mate.
Johan Van der Zee is now 400 years old. He is working as a NYC detective under the name John Amsterdam, one of many assumed names throughout the years. In the pilot episode he experiences a heart attack and dies... and revives in the morgue. He realizes that he recently crossed paths with the person who will allow him to finally grow old.
Each episode, John is working to solve a murder with the help of his vast experience and wisdom, as well as the help of his new partner Eva. Each week we also see a different aspect of his past as his memories are triggered.
I am so intrigued by what will happen next. Amsterdam has a lot more memories to share with us. Also, despite all of the love of his past, nothing can compare to the love of his future.. the woman he can connect with like noone else. He one he can grow old with. So Cool!!!

If I analyzed every TV show I watched, I'd come away with a lack of enjoyment and a big headache. I worked in the law enforcement environment for many years. I know these crime shows include a lot of bull puckey. However, I watch TV to be entertained and to 'escape' for awhile. This show does entertain me. I enjoy the escape. Mr. Coster-Waldau is an eyefull in my opinion. I intend to keep watching it until it's gone.

i would buy this on dvd rather then unbox, becuase i can only see the show in weird white and purplse color almost. This is also with the entreatment. i got these shows for free, so this is why not asking for refund on them .

There are things I don't like about this show. I can see that already, and I've only viewed two episodes. For example, I am a bit irked by how knowing the main character is. He seems almost psychic, but then--he has the advantage of wisdom gained over decades and decades of living. When I keep that in mind, I can ignore how know-it-all he sounds at first listen. I do like that lead character, though. The actor who plays him (whose name I won't destroy by mucking up the spelling here) does a good job of walking that line between humor and sarcasm, and he's good with emotion, too. There's one scene in the pilot where his heart gives out on him, and the expressions crossing his face were just excellently done.
The premise is a neat one, too. I like the whole idea of him searching for his soul mate, and I like the fact that he's clearly been really searching for her and that he hasn't been a user and abuser in his search. He's pretty liberal in his approach to humanity, and I like that as well.
The photography is nicely done as well, as are all the scenes showing New York shifting and changing from John Amsterdam's early life to the current landscape.
