2 out of 5 stars Superficial, unspecific   August 15, 2010

I have had German Shepherd Dogs for many years, and I bought this book on a whim (it was on sale around the check-out area of one of these pet superstores). I have found that maybe 10% of the book is specifically about GSDs, the rest is completely general, trivial stuff that applies to any dog whatsoever. It reads like a book about all types of dogs, written for beginners, with one sentence here and there added to suit the breed. Maybe if you never had a dog, and you just adopted a GSD, this book could be helpful (although, if you never had experience with dogs, it's a terrible idea to start with a GSD!)

If you are looking for anything but the most superficial information, that could easily be found on the web (e.g., Wikipedia), then this book is not for you.

5 out of 5 stars Satisfied GSD owner!   July 21, 2010

The internet offers us plenty of information on these wonderful dogs but I have found so much more breed specific information with this book then i have found in loads of time searching the internet. The book is broken down into sections and each section is well written and VERY informative. I have learned many new approaches to training my puppy Maverick and they are working. I have not had the opportunity to watch the DVD but so far the book has been well worth the price and will be a good guide to have at hand while my little buddy is growing up.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for all German Shepherd owners!   March 29, 2010

This book is a great resource for anyone that owns or has owned a German Shepherd. It has great information and is easy to read. It has a lot of useful facts and a great description of the breed. It helps explains some of my dogs behaviors. It's not only for people that are new to the breed. I haven't looked at the DVD yet, but I'm excited to continue learning more about my dog. My dog fits the description of the typical behaviors of German Shepherds. Great book, for a great price!

A wonderful text that aptly describes the breed, the photos really help give you an idea of how different the look of the german shepherd dpg can be. Training this dogs takes a light hand, and as stated Autumn of Blessed Acres service dogyou should never hit a shepherd..... the training is basic and well presented.

4 out of 5 stars Book good, DVD not worth it   August 4, 2008

As a first time dog owner, I found this book very helpful, it is packed with history of the German Shepherd dog, and I was impressed with the additional information on the White Shepherd Dog (which is what I have). There is a lot of breed-specific information throughout, and good beginning tips on training (though I purchased another book specifically for training also).

The DVD that comes with the book is not really that great, it's got no specific German Shepherd Dog content, and the training guide in it encourages you to train with constant treat motivation.

Also, not content-related, I really liked the feel of this book, it's a hard cover but opens flat, and the pages have a nice feel as you read through it.
